Knut Fleckenstein was very clear when he read the conclusions of the European Council for opening the accession negotiations with Albania.
“I can only congratulate you”, Fleckenstein said.
The rapporteur for Albania at the European Parliament had several advises for the Albanian politics.
He spoke about the expectancies during these 12 months; “The reforms are expected to continue without any other interruptions. I am happy that there are conditions, but also that there are no new conditions. The Council underlines that they see progress in the key priorities. 25 out of 28 member countries are OK. I wanted the negotiations to open one year ago, maybe. The countries that said ‘no’, it wasn’t because of Albania, but because of the situation within the EU. They are convinced that we need to resolve our issues first”, he said.
The EU Ambassador to Albania, Romana Vlahutin, shared the same opinion.
“Albania should not lose a second, because your country has lost a lot in the past. Screening starts this year. It is a very important engagement. Albania has decided to do something very wise, work ahead of the time. You have done a good job with the judiciary reform. We wouldn’ be here without it”, she said.
The Albanian Minister for Europe and Foreign Affairs, Ditmir Bushati, said that in July they will start working with the chapters. I believe that one year will be enough for Albania and Macedonia to conclude the preparations. I hope that the EU follows the process of reforms during this year’.
