The German European MP, Knut Fleckenstein, valued the electoral process
in Albania and sees free way for the accession negotiations. He expects
Rama to know how to use power.
The Rapporteur for Albania at the European Parliament told Deutsche Welle that elections were regular, in a general way, although there were cases of vote purchase. “This needs to be addressed, because it is a matter of how a country is organized. It is actually a matter of honor”, Fleckenstein said.
Fleckenstein didn’t comment Basha’s claims for an unequal race and irregularities, because he prefers to wait for the final OSCE-ODIHr report.
According to him, the Rama-Basha agreement paid a major role for the calm elections. “Now, the Prime Minister has its path open and he must prove that he knows how to use this power”, Fleckenstein said.
The government’s task now are the implementation of the Judiciary Reform, progress with the fight against drugs, corruption and organized crime. Another important point is addressing problems with property ownerships. “Rama cannot complain that he will not be busy”, Fleckenstein said.
As for the negotiations, he quoted Eduard Kukan and confirmed that the improvement in these elections was tangible. Now, the accession talks must start.
“Maybe there will be a few months and weeks until everyone sits on a discussion table, but there should be no new obstacles, because that wouldn’t be right”, Fleckenstein said.
