10 business owners and administrators were arrested for stealing electricity on the first day of the State Police operation.

The Minister of Energy, Damian Gjiknuri, said that the operation has started in some areas of the Albanian capital, and will spread throughout the country.

“We are operating in several areas of Tirana. This operation will continue throughout the country. Each day we will have cases of abusers being punished, and we will report the number of arrested people each day”, Gjiknuri declared.

“We will arrest people being caught in the act. We have had several arrests so far in Tirana”, declared the Head of the Energy Distribution System, Arben Seferi.

The Minister said that the first phase of the operation will focus on business only, then they will continue with consumers.

“Citizens who have not paid will have their lines cut. Those who will try to reconnect the line without permit, will be committing a crime. Whoever reconnects the energy after the authorities have interrupted it will face the law”, Gjiknuri declared.

The government says that the energy losses come due to the thefts in the network, causing a damage of 150 million USD each year.
