The Commission of Economy passed a law that allowes the Financial
Supervision Authority to decide on its own for the salaries and perks of
their workers, without any limitation from the national salary system.
The draft was voted through debates, while the opposition was against it.
“How can they spend public money without limitation? Their salary of their director will be higher than that of the President”, protested the former Minister of Finances, Ridvan Bode.
But the majority argued that the independence of the Financial Supervision Authority was requested by the international community.
“This was a request of the International Monetary Fund, and you know this very well”, declared the Chairman of this Commission, Erjon Brace.
The Financial Supervision Authority became the second institution in Albania that won the right to spend the public’s money for their salaries without a legal limitation. The first institution is the Bank of Albania, which has caused strong debates and has been reported by the Supreme State Audit.
Despite the financial independence, another disputed part of the new law was the interruption of mandates for some existing members, a move that the opposition considered as politically biased.
