Fifth anniversary of NATO accession

On the fifth anniversary of the NATO accession, Prime Minister Edi Rama
declared that the country’s responsibilities in the Alliance are not
just military.

Rama participated in a special ceremony at the Ministry of Defense, with the highest officials of the Armed Forces. Rama addressed to every Albanian and every military member, that our country is required to fulfill with dignity the high standards of democracy, of rule of law and of the free market economy.

“The responsibility to carry even burdens of others is one of the reasons why Albanians should be proud today. It is one of the most extraordinary and serious obligations in our country’s history. Carrying our share of the responsibility for all NATO operations around the world is an integral part of our country’s obligations, and our obligation to our country. We can confirm with pride that in these five years, Albania has fulfilled and keeps fulfilling successfully every responsibility within the Alliance”, Rama declared.

The Prime Minister listed the needed reforms:

“Drafting the first strategic document of national security since our NATO accession; a deep legal and structural reform in the security institutions; constantly modernizing the armed forces, the state police, intelligent services and other law-enforcing structures: these are today’s main priorities, part of our daily agenda, with all our will and resources, as a government that works for an European and serious Albania, which is always responsible in the big decision-making table of NATO”, Rama stated.

The Minister of Defense, Mimi Kodheli, declared that there will be reforms for vitalizing the army.

“It is not difficult for us, as Albanians, to consider NATO as (Besa), an oath of honor between friends who are determined to defend each other and the right to live in peace and prosperity. We are committed to keep our role as members of this alliance. We will implement with determination the reforms needed to revive the army and the institutions of the Ministry of Defense, in order to establish standards equal to those of our NATO counterparts”, Kodheli declared.

The anian President was not present in this ceremony. His press office declared that the President had not received a personalized invitation, as the protocol requires, since he is the General Commander of the Armed Forces. The President had received an invitation similar to all other guests. The President had not received an agenda for this ceremony, and no speech was planned for him in the fifth anniversary of the NATO accession.
