Fewer people to possess arms

The new law for arm possession and usage has caused debates at the
Commission of Laws. The Interior Minister, Saimir Tahiri, declared that
there will be harsher rules and based on the European Union.

The Police and any other political force will have to hand over their AK-47 and TT handguns, which are considered as military weapons, and will be equipped with other types of guns.

Now there are stricter rules for possessing a fire arm, and the right to have one will be removed from local leaders, judges and ministers.

“The new law will not allow police and private security officers to possess powerful weapons like the AK-47”, Tahiri declared.

Referring to the tragedy of January 21st, 2011, Tahiri declared that the new law bans the usage of weapons even for dispersing protests.

“The guns were used against protesters in January 21st. This will not be allowed anymore”, Tahiri declared.

The opposition had nothing against the law, but they spoke about the situation of the public order. Democratic MP, Eduard Halimi, was involved in a debate with Minister Tahiri. Their concern was the murder of banker Artan Santo, while the Interior Minister declared that the Prosecution should be encouraged to find the real authors.

“What can the Minister say about criminals who circulate for weeks with a motorcycle without plates, and kill a businessman 50 meters from a building? This is public security for us. How many armed robberies of the past six months have been resolved? How many of the murders that took place during these months have been resolved? What about the businessmen who have been killed”, Halimi declared.

“The Minister does not work for distributing guns to the population. The ones responsible for this are you, who opened the army depots in 1997 and brought the country to this point. As for the recent event, it is surely very serious and we are investigating. These are difficult investigations, but they are led by the Prosecution, which needs more encouragement”, Tahiri declared.

Both laws were voted in principle only by the majority. Two opposition MPs, the only ones remaining during the voting, have abstained.
