Orthodox clergyman of the Church of St. Mary in Elbasan, Father Nikolla Marku, has asked the Ecumenical Patriarch of Kostandinopojë, Bartholomew I, to take action against Archbishop Anastas Janullatos, who runs from 1992 the Albanian Autocephalous Orthodox Church.
Through a letter to the senior hierarch of the Orthodox Community of East and diplomatic representatives in Tirana, father Nikolla Marku accuses Janullatos that he is using the Orthodox Church for anti Albanian purposes, where he includes Përmet event.
“Grace Bartholomew, although you are of the Greek nationality, the same of temporary priest Anastas Janullatos, we do not hesitate at all to let you know about the anti-Albanian politics of this priest with some associates chosen by him, violating every article of the Statute of the church. We believe that your conscience and faith will overcome the friendship that you have with Janullatos, a friendship that should not hinder you to judge this matter righteously,” said Father Nikolla Marku.
Father Nikolla Marku, who, historically, is opposed to Archbishop Anastas Janullatos and has accused him of an anti-Albanian politics, seeks in his letter to the Ecumenical Patriarch of Constantinople, the intervention for compliance with the autocephalous Albanian Orthodox Church, which, according to Father Nikolla Marku is affected by Archbishop Janullatos in favor of the Greek Orthodox Church with a purpose.
“Grace Bartholomew, Anastas Janullatos has turned the Albanian Orthodox faith into an annex of the Greek Orthodox Church with certain chauvinistic purposes, to the detriment of Albania. This man does not work for faith, but for the annexation of Southern Albania. By what right the Greek Church interferes in the affairs of the Albanian Orthodox Church? Why the Greek Church asks the Greek state to damage Albania’s Euro-Atlantic integration process? We have done nothing negative against the Greek Church or against the Greek state in the EU forums. Eminence Bartholomew, we ask that the Patriarchate of Istanbul to comply with the 1936 ruling, which recognizes the independence of Greek Orthodox Church of Albania from any other church,” says father Nikolla Marku.
