Farmers protest low price of tomatoes

Farmers of the Goricaj village, Divjaka, gathered in the village center to protest the low price of tomatoes.

According to them, production has remained unsold because the market price goes below their cost.

“We are protesting because our products are given away very cheaply. We have production, but we cannot sell it with that price”, farmers say.

They said that tomato buyers have created fictive prices.

“There is more competence in depots and they also give fake prices, with other prices for the export”, said Ardjan Kuka, exporter.

The Agriculture Director for Lushnje, Agirm Rrasa, talked with protesting farmers. Specialists say that the increased area of planted tomatoes has brought more production, which has reduced the price.

Greenhouses in 2015 were spread in 475 hectares. In 2016 there are 525 hectares.
