The massive damage to the farmers of Korça, Maliqi and Devolli in southeastern Albania, as a result of the sudden hailstorm of two days ago, caused them to protest today in front of the Regional Directorate of Agriculture, asking for protection from the state.
Tired of facing similar situations every year and the lack of alternatives that provide them with protection from natural disasters, farmers seek compensation for the damages they have suffered mainly in the horticulture sector as their losses are huge. According to the farmers, in conditions where their production has been destroyed, the only alternative left is to emigrate and abandon agriculture.
From the verifications in the field so far, the damages are large, reaching hundreds of hectares of fruit trees, while the expert groups are continuing to record the damage caused and to draft a report for the ministry.
Damages from natural disasters have harmed also in the past farmers in Korça, but the only procedure that is followed is that of field verification and reporting to the agriculture ministry.
