Before taking center stage on the holiday table, turkeys in Peqin have made their annual appearance at the poultry fair as a traditional end-of-year staple food.
The Peqin area in central Albania is known for raising turkeys, but farmers still suffer from a lack of market and fierce competition from imported poultry.
The Ministry of Agriculture and the local government acknowledge the problems regarding the lack of market and the challenge that imports pose to local production, but they still appeal to citizens to consume local products.
Peqin raises about 30 thousand turkeys every year. Following the tradition of their ancestors, farmers have focused on raising their poultry with a lot of care for almost 10 months of the year, so that it comes as the main dish at the table for the end-of-year holidays.
