Extreme poverty for sick family

Hysen Culli, almost 80, is the father of a large family and full of
problems, settled three years ago in the Cepo commune, Gjirokastra.

“We came here from Progonat, to be closer to the doctors for our two sick sons, Cajup, 40, and Afrim, 44”, he says.

“I buy medicine all the time for my sons and my wives. We have two sons who are very sick, and all our resources are just the farmers’ pensions”, Hysen Culli declared.

Afrim, 44, now with the paraplegic status, is the only one who benefits a full disability pension in the family. The other son, Cajup, suffers from a mental illness and treats it with a very cheap cure.

The family has been living in debts for years and have never profited any help. Besides the two-year-old nephew of the family, everyone else is treated with medicine. The cost of the medicaments goes beyond their resources, and for this reason they have been seeking help wherever they could.

The communes have a 3% of the annual budget fund that they have to use for families in several emergencies, but this has not happened for any family so far in the Gjirokaster District.
