After 2009, when economy took a strong blow from the world crisis,
Albania avoided recession thanks to a steady growth of exports.

In 2010, exports reached 1,610,000,000 USD, with a record growth rate of 56.5%, compared to one year earlier. The positive tendency continued even in the first months of this year, although with a twice slower pace. But in the past month, according to INSTAT, this tendency changed and exports not only did not grow, but for the first time in two years they decreased with 8.3% compared to May 2010.

The Albanian companies sold their goods and services outside Albania with a value of 15 million USD less than in the same month of one year ago. Data show that the export decline came from only one economic voice, that of the minerals, combustible matters and electrical energy.

This was the sector with the strongest growth in the last year, when only the electric corporation sold more than 170 million USD in energy. But water reserves are not overly filled this year, and KESH announced that it will not export energy, but will save it for domestic reserves.

This means that in the six months to come, it will be more difficult for exports to keep the same level, and if this tendency will be confirmed, the hopes of the economy for keeping these minimal production growth rates will depend on public investments and inner consume, for which Bank of Albania declared yesterday that there have been significant decreases.
