The burning of reeds in order to increase the cultivable agricultural area is leading to the disappearance of the Lake Prespa e Vogël in southeastern Albania.
Considered as one of the important natural assets of the country, part of the Prespa National Park, the lake, which is largely swampy and filled with reeds, has been engulfed in flames in the last few days.
The burned area reaches several hectares and according to experts the damage caused is fatal for the ecosystem as the habitats of the curly pelican and other creatures of which the shelter has been destroyed.
According to the residents of the villages around the lake, the phenomenon of fires in this area is repeated.
The fires in the lake of Prespa e Vogël are annual, and start from the side parts where the road passes, penetrating into the interior of the lake, while the Fire Service remains hand tied in its interventions due to the difficult terrain.
