Expensive elections

The Central Election Commission failed to approve the budget for the
elections of June 23rd. The money distribution was opposed even by the
majority.

The suggested cost for the elections is 741 million ALL, most of which will be used to pay the Commissioners on the Election Day.

The members opposed the high payment of 25.000 ALL for technicians who will only report the participation. They also opposed extra payments for Commissioners.

The members were also against spending for ramps that would help disabled people to vote, which are used only once for each election.

“We can’t afford paying these equipments for every election”, declared Hysen Osmanaj, CEC member. But the decision was postponed after the Director of Electoral Commissions refused to sign.

The budget for the elections of June 23rd is around 9 million ALL less than the elections of 2011, although there are more electoral zones.

The 741 million budget does not include the cost of new technology that will be used in Fier and Tirana, since the tender has not started yet.

After this price will be added to the total, these will be the most expensive elections ever held by Albania.
