Now that his mandate is about to end, the US Ambassador, Donald Lu, speaks with the same energy as in the beginning when it about the judicial reform and corrupted politicians.
“Corrupted politicians should be afraid”, this is one of the best known sentences of Donald Lu. When asked by Top Channel about the progress of the judicial reform and vetting process, the US Ambassador said he was optimistic and he supported the new institutions without reserves.
“I trust that the judicial reform is producing real results for the Albanian people. It is removing corrupted and incapable judges and prosecutors, and it is reconfirming the honest ones, so that they can continue their work. The results are impressive. The Vetting Commission has discharged 21 judges and prosecutors and confirmed 27. Some cases will be appealed. The process is a huge step ahead, towards a more righteous and more independent judiciary. Common citizens must now expect to have vetted judges and prosecutors, who will not request bribes and who will not submit to political pressure. Finally citizens will be able to expect true justice”, Lu declared.
What about the Judiciary and Prosecution High Commissions? Is the US ambassador concerned about their delays? Donald Lu says he shares the same concerns with the opposition about the delays for building the new justice institutions, be he trusts that the delay will not be for too long.
“I agree with the opposition that it is imperative for the new judiciary institutions to be established quicker. This will allow the appointing of a prosecutor with a full mandate, the appointing of the Supreme Court Judges and the creation of the Special Prosecution Against Corruption and the National Bureau of Investigation. I trust that the process will be concluded in the weeks to come. The Vetting Process is functioning. We are very close to the next phase of the reform”, he said.
