On a beach no more than a kilometer north of the tourist town of Saranda, a Czech tourist has discovered dozens of mortar shells just 20 meters off the coast.
David was looking for a quiet beach with few people and dived filming under the water when discovered the dangerous ammunition.
“We were looking for beaches without people. When we first found them we were swimming 20 feet off the shore. At about 4 meters depth there are about 30-40 shells. We were shocked. They look initially like bottles, I made videos and when I saw them on the shore I was convinced they were bombs. They are quite close to the shore. Something must be done”.
David immediately signaled to other Czech and Polish tourists in Albania. They have created a group on Facebook and share their experiences when traveling or visiting unusual places.
David also signalled the Albainian police in Saranda, but in the area where the dangerous shells are located there is no indication and other tourists continue to go there.
“Kathy also had children and this can be very dangerous. We are shocked. I am in Albania for the first time. But this is a very bad thing for tourism.
People were scared. I call on the police and the government to do something, put signage. It is dangerous for tourists. I have been here 10 days, I want to come back but I’m afraid”.
Soldiers who have seen the videos filmed underwater by the tourist say the ammunition is relatively new and not from World War II. They stated that it may have been taken from one of the nearby military units during the 1997 riots and then dumped at sea.
