The Institution of Archeology, in cooperation with the Italian team of archeologists at the Macerata University, have brought to light new and important details after making several excavations at the Paleokastra Castle.
The object mentioned by the English scholar, Hammond, and studied in the 70s by Albanian archaeologists, belongs to the late antiquity period. The castle was built between 311-314 A.D, and it was mainly used for military reasons.
The castle was destroyed by the Goths in 378, and new findings are shedding light on its Paleochristian basilica.
The 1-hectare castle was rebuilt in the fifth century after it was destroyed by the Goths, and this is when the two Paleochristian basilicas were built.
Life in the castle has continued until the end of the Sixth Century. The findings of this expedition will be conserved, while the site is being studied by dozens of Albanian and foreign students.
