The EU High Representative for Foreign Policy, Federica Mogherini, invited the presidents of Kosovo and Serbia to meet in Brussels this Sunday, June 24th.
Mogherini says that they need to continue their work for normalizing relations, discuss about the existing agreements, achievements, and further steps, seeing that a more intensive period of talks is expected in the near future.
The meeting of this Sunday is seen as an effort to reach a legally bound agreement for normalizing relations between both countries.
The initially technical talks between Kosovo and Serbia started in 2011. In April 2013, Kosovo and Serbia reached the first agreement for normalizing relations, which included several matters.
These agreements secured Serbia’s EU accession negotiations and the Stabilization Association Agreement for Kosovo. However, the latter remains last as regards Europe’s integration processes.
An all-inclusive agreement for normalizing relations is a condition for both countries to progress with the EU integration. Prishtina says it should include a mutual recognition and admission of Kosovo in the UN, while Belgrade opposes Kosovo’s independence and demands compromise, without specifying what it includes.
