The Mayor of Tirana, Erion Veliaj, was awarded in Brussels as the most Friendly Mayor towards the Roma community.

The award was given by the European Commission, valuing his local policies for the Roma in Tirana.

“They have been accommodated in better places, they have been included in our education system and social welfare. I am proud for all Tirana citizens who are open-minded and emancipated, and who understand that if we, as citizens, do not accept those who are a bit different from us, we cannot expect the EU to accept Albanians, who are also seen as a bit different from EU countries”, Veliaj said.

This award, according to Veliaj, is given not only to the citizens of Tirana but also to Albanians in general.

“By giving a good example in Tirana about how to behave as good Europeans, we can now demand to advance with our EU path and receive the EU accession negotiations”, Veliaj said.
