A member of the European Union Mission for the Rule of Law in Kosovo
(EULEX) has been killed in northern Kosovo, an area of Serbian majority.
EULEX declared that in the first hours of this Wednesday, in a Zveca village, one of the mission cars with six members in it has been shot while crossing the border between Kosovo and Serbia, in Jarina. A Lithuanian officer who served with EULEX died in this attack that is yet to be explained.
This is the first case that a member of the European Union mission dies since their arrival, when Kosovo declared its independence which has been constantly opposed by Belgrade and northern Serbs.
In a press release, EULEX strongly condemned this “unfortunate act of violence against one of their members”, and asked the community to help them uncover the circumstances of this attack and bring the authors to justice. The President of Kosovo, Atifete Jahjaga, reacted by saying that the attack against EULEX, a mission that gives constant efforts together with the other security institutions to establish law and order in Kosovo, is a completely intolerable act of violence coming from forces which serve only to the purpose of destabilizing our country and the constitutional order.
“The attack against EULEX is against the values of Kosovo”, Jahjaga declared.
The Prime Minister of Kosovo, Hashim Thaci, condemned the attack and declared that the government, in cooperation with EULEX, KFOR and other international partners, is determined to keep realizing all constitutional and legal obligations for establishing the rule of law in Kosovo, especially in the northern areas.
The United States ambassador to Prishtina, Tracey Jacobson, declared that she was shocked by the event and sad for the life that was lost.
The Head of the European Diplomacy, Catherine Ashton, sent her condolences to the victim’s family and friends, saying: “I condemn in the strongest possible terms the attack that brought the death of one of our staff members. Authors should be brought to justice”, Ashton declared.
This episode was condemned strongly even by our Minister of Foreign Affairs, who says that the attack against EULEX severely damaged the rule of law in the entire republic of Kosovo.
