EU enlargement perspective

The Forum of World Leaders at the Columbia University, United States of
America, has been led in the past years by international figures such as
Herman Van Rompuy, President of the European Union; Enrico Letta, Prime
Minister of Italy, and Borut Pahor, President of Slovenia. This year it
is led by the Albanian Prime Minister, Edi Rama.

Rama was invited in this Forum to speak on the European enlargement perspective of Southeastern European Countries, as an agenda for Europe itself. Rama emphasized his trust that Europe is not a destination close to us, but a destination within us, expressing the awareness that it is a process that first of all depends on the lawmakers.

“It represents the awareness that our daily actions, as lawmakers, affect the life and possibilities of the people today and that of the future generations, the generation of Europe. The key of the Southeastern European agenda for enlargement should be this concern, that the common future of next-generation Europe is being build by the member countries, the candidate countries and the potentially candidate countries as well, such as the Southeastern Europe. The question is not how to make Southeastern Europe ready for the European Union, but how can we build the European Union altogether, and how we can build the European future”, Rama declared.

According to Rama, Western Balkan countries that aspire for European Union accession are expected to behave as such, underlining that this is possible since the region has left behind the old conflicts.

“With the recent agreements reached between Serbia and Kosovo, our region closed once and for all a conflict, by opening a new chapter for the Albanians, the Albanians of Kosovo, the Montenegrins, Serbian, Macedonian and Bosnian people. This must be the beginning of behavior as candidate countries. Acting as a candidate country means not waiting for the legislations that Brussels will propose to adopt, regardless of you implement them or not. The right behavior as a candidate country means being an active part in the planning of this legislation as well as in turning it to reality for our countries. Behaving as a candidate country means being oriented to results in the completing of the membership criteria”, Rama declared.
