An article of the British newspaper, “The Economist”, writes that the EU
accession door remains open for Balkan, but the region must make more
efforts to reach it.
“The Economist” says that Balkan has lost the former strong support of Britain, a country that has had raised concerns about illegal immigration recently. Germany, on the other hand, has played a more active role.
However, the article says that the deeper problems are not up to the EU, but the region should do something about it. The progress of Bosnia with its non-functional government has been considered slow. Macedonia remains blocked by the conflict with Greece, while Kosovo remains behind, since it is the only country whose people cannot travel visa free in the Schengen area.
The newspaper says that Albania is the main candidate that has the green light for starting the negotiation talks by the end of this year. However, the British newspaper says that the new post of Federica Mogherini is good luck for Western Balkan. She is the highest representative of the EU for Foreign Policy, and she has good knowledge about the area.
“The Economist” concludes the article by saying that a stable Balkan is good for everyone, but a destabilized and poor Balkan could turn into a source of crime and illegal immigrants.
