As demanded by President Donald Tusk, the Euhad an urgent meeting in
Brussels regarding the human traffic while the funeral of the 900
victims is undergoing through the Italian and Maltese authorities.
Donald Tusk, President of the European Union Council declared: “The leaders agreed on the priority action fields. They asked the High Representative to prepare actions so that the traffic can be stopped before they act. This will be done according the international rights, of course, and by respecting the human rights. We will increase the cooperation against traffics and smuggling through Europol and immigration officers in third world countries. We will do more to protect the immigrants. The EU will help the member countries with the pressure and will coordinate to regulate more people in Europe based on volunteer works and another opportunity for emergent dislocation”.
Jean-Claude Juncker, President of the European Council underlined: “The funds mount up to 120 million EUR, which corresponds mostly for Mare Nostrum. I am happy that most of the citizens contributed with ships, helicopters and so on. We will reinforce our physical and personnel. We will start with a pilot experience as regards the concern and the solution. This will be done with volunteers bases for the moment, since we do not have a legal text that makes it obligatory”.
The conclusions of the European summit did not satisfy Amnesty International, which gathered thousands of protesters in front of the Council’s building.
“They didn’t save the lives, but their faces with this operation”, declared the European office of this oragnization, underlining that “Triton is not a solution if its mandate does not change”.
Donald Tusk appeared very sincere when he declared that no one should have any illusion that this can be resolved overnight. Nordic countries answered with solidarity to the appeal of the Prime Minister of Malta, the country that is facing the crisis. The French President, Holand, said there will be aids, but he didn’t specify any detail.
The British Prime Minister, Cameron, declared that there will be a budget support to the stabilization of the neighboring countries, with the condition that the immigrants are sheltered in the closest safe European country and not the UK.
Martin Schulz, President of the European Parliament, argued that the EU needs a quota system, since 90% of immigrants go to only 10 countries. 50% of them go to Sweden, Italy, Germany and France, when there are 28 member countries.
Despite the problems, Stefan Löfven, the Swedish Prime Minister, guaranteed refugees for their asylum rights, while his counterpart, Mark Rutte, declared that Netherlands has always room for people who really need help.
The problem, according to him, is that many other countries don’t have the same solidarity. For the Prime Minister of Luxembourg, Bettel, Immigration is an international problem, not only a European one.
