Western Balkan is on top of the agenda in the meeting of EU Defense Ministers in Brussels.
The ministers will discuss new security initiatives with the region, in what is seen an important step for accession.
The focus will be on how the block will coordinate the security and migration policies with Balkan countries.
The meeting comes after the European Commission presented the enlargement strategy, made public last month, in which they mentioned that the Balkan countries could join the Union by 2025.
Although in the document clearly states that this date was valid for Serbia and Montenegro, Jean-Claude Juncker declared in Tirana that this deadline doesn’t exclude other countries, but their approach will be based on merit.
Safety is one of the six key initiatives presented at the Commission’s strategy.
According to Brussels, the focus areas include organized crime and terror, foreign fighters, traffic of arms and explosives.
All the security recommendations planned in this meeting will be made official in the political objectives during the EU-Western Balkan summit that will be held in Sophia on May 17th.
