Enlargement is one of the main policies of the European Union, but the
crises and bitter experiences with past enlargement processes have
raised more voices that pretend that enlargement has brought only
trouble.
The integration conditions are getting more difficult, which fades the possibilities for a faster admission of the Western Balkans”, says Deutsche Welle.
The latter quotes the General Directory of Enlargement at the European Commission, Stefano Sannino, who says that there is no direct connection of the Eurozone crisis with the enlargement.
“But this process is getting more complicated. Partially, due to political reasons, and I don’t have why to hide this. We have learned things from the last experiences”, Sannino declared.
To illustrate these confirmations, there is the example of Croatia, which will sign the membership agreement by the end of this year, but had a harder admission road than any other country.
Although there are no official words in the EU for being tired from the enlargement, the MEP Ulrike Lunacek says that this is a fact, but that is more related with the social insecurity within the block.
Some EU leaders seem to regret the fact that they have not been strict enough with the admissions of 2004 and 2007, and now they are more careful with the membership criteria.
