The European Commission is reported to have requested information regarding the details of the latest agreement signed by Rome and Tirana, for the processing in Albania of illegal immigrants coming to Italy, an EU spokesman said on Tuesday, ANSA Italian agency reports.

“We are in contact with the Italian authorities. We asked to get details of the migration agreement with Albania,” said spokeswoman Anitta Hipper.

“Before we comment further, we need to understand exactly what the purpose is,” she added.

The spokeswoman emphasized that the Commission was informed about the agreement before its signing on Monday. She added that the issue “looks different” from Britain’s agreement with Rwanda to send its migrants to the African country.

Under the agreement, Italy is granted the right to use designated areas without compensation.

The areas that will be put to use will be managed entirely by the Italian party and according to the jurisdiction of the Italian state. It is also agreed that the number of migrants present in the designated areas will not exceed 3,000.

According to information from Top Channel, it is learned that refugee camps will be built in the area of Gjadri in Lezhë in the northwest of Albania. They will be kept in the hosting structures, only for the purpose of carrying out the border procedures, while the maximum period of their stay will be in accordance with the period defined in the Italian legislation.
