The European Summit of Heads of States confirmed the EU strategy for the
Adriatic-Ionian Region that was proposd on June 17th by the European
Commission.
The strategy aims to promote development and prosperity for 70 million residents in the region, making it more attractive, and by improving relations and competition.
Four EU countries, Croatia, Greece, Italy and Slovenia, will cooperate with four other Balkan countries: Albania, Bosnia, Serbia and Montenegro, with joint projects, with inclusion of the civil society and private companies in four key areas, such as the environment quality, coastline development, regional connections and stable tourism.
Commissioner Johannes Hann considered the summit’s decision an important milestone for the joint treatment of problems and distribution of possibilities to Western Balkan partners.
According to him, it is now up to the above-mentioned countries that worked to translate this strategy into results. Commissioner Maria Damanaki valued the macro-regional strategy through a press release.
The EU strategy for the coastline development showed that the oceans have the potential to generate jobs and guarantee economic development.
A similar strategy is being prepared by the Commission for the Alpine Region, which includes Austria, France, Switzerland, Lichtenstein, Germany, Italy and Slovenia.
This was the last European summit for the Head of the Union, Herman Van Rompuy, who will be succeeded on December 1st by Donald Tusk, former Foreign Minister of Poland.
As for the last photo with the European leaders, the Belgian former Prime Minister, Van Rompuy, invited his six nephews and nieces at the institution he led for two mandates, and closed his political career at 67 years of age.
