The European Commissioner for Enlargement, Johannes Hahn, said in an
interview for Deutsche Welle that there are concrete investment projects
to prepare them Balkan countries join the EU, such as the
transportation agreement.

This means that Balkan countries will be connected with EU laws, which improve economic relations and give new impulses to the region.

“We will pass a series of transportation and energy projects, mounting up to 200 million EUR. They will result with a total investment value of 540 million EUR. It is of a key importance to create a base for the economic growth in the region, and for an inter-regional trade, which has a lot of potentials”, Hahn said.

The Commissioner expressed the conviction of other EU leaders, and said that 80.000 new jobs will be created in the region the next years.

The constant problem with Balkan is the slow implementation of the many promises that are taken. Another stalemate are the shadows of past conflicts, which don’t make for an easy solution.

“We want to unite the six Western Balkan countries, despite their level, in the EU accession process. We are currently holding negotiations with Serbia and Montenegro. We are still far with the others. But our efforts are going to include them in the EU infrastructure of transportation and energy”, Hahn added.

There are six transportation projects. The railway project known as Corridor 8 will connect the East with the West. It goes from Bulgaria to Macedonia and it could even continue through Albania.
