Sea advances each year with 2.5 meters in the Kune Vaini lagoon and the Shengjin coast.
It might be strange, but in 75 years the sea has advanced 400 meters inland in the most problematic areas. This means that with this pace, the sea might take lands which are 30 meters above the sea level today.
Jak Gjini, environment specialists, explains that the sea is “eating” the land each day more.
“There are areas where this figure reaches 4 meters. Forests have been altered. The sea is free to enter and it goes through dams in cases of floods”.
The sea advancement is clear even for the past five years. Bunkers are half covered from water and plants have been totally destroyed from salt water.
“We have had entire areas of forest that have been ruined. The erosion is so fast and aggressive, that there is no time for recovery”, Gjini added.
Protected areas, such as the managed natural reserve of the Kune Vaini in Lezha represents an area of high ecological and biodiversity values. At first sight, no one would think about erosion, climatic conditions or birds that leave the area, because its sight is still beautiful. But when specialists say how it used to be some times ago, it becomes very clear.
