The President of European Popular Parties, Joseph Daul, supported the
decision of the Albanian Democratic Party to boycott the Parliament,
until the basic rights of the opposition are met.
Mr.Daul, a historic supporter of the Democratic Party, even as majority and as opposition, kept this stance after a meeting in Brussels with the Democratic Party leader, Lulzim Basha, and he left no room for interpretation when he was asked if the opposition’s boycott seemed normal to him.
“There are rules that need to be respected. If the Constitutional Court issues verdicts, they should be respected by the Parliament. If the Parliament doesn’t respect the basic rights and the judiciary system, then it’s not worthy to stay in Parliament. I promised to raise this question at the Euroepan level, because the rule of law and justice are a priority for the EU”, Daul declared.
Joseph Daul is known as one of the harshest critics of Mr.Rama, since when he was in opposition. At this time they met for the first time at “Krokodil”, in Strasbourg, four years earlier. Even today, the Frenchman who leads the European Popular Party didn’t spare critical tones against Rama.
“I know Mr.Rama. I had the chance to have a long conversation with him during a meeting in Strasbourg for the ballot recount issue. Rama should have been the first one to give an example of respecting justice and the rule of law”, Daul declared.
The EPP president, who group has the Presidency of the European Commission and the Enlargement Commissioner, promised Lulzim Basha that Brussels would take a significant step.
“I see the facts. We will have a new European Commission very soon. We will ask the European Commission to make thorough investigations for the behavior of the Albanian Parliament. Judging by what has happened in that Parliament, and with some people who are in government, we will have many questions”, Daul underlined.
Daul says on Facebook that he met the Democratic Party leader about the concerning situation in Albania, and noted that “the rule of law and decisions of the Constitutional Court have to be respected so that the Parliament becomes the pinnacle of democracy again”.
