EPP, Conference for enlargement

While Jean-Claude Juncker, the main candidate of the European Popular
Parties for the Head of the European Commission, speaks about a
suspension of the enlargement process, the right centered parties of the
European Parliament held their fourth annual conference on Balkan, with
the topic “From Stabilization to Association”.

“Choosing the membership path is something. Keeping this path is something else. What I want to say to Albania, Serbia, Montenegro and FYROM is that investing on this path is not an easy solution”, declared Joseph Daul, president of the European Popular Parties.

Eduard Kukan, while speaking about the difficult EU membership path, advised his colleagues from Balkan to take a look at the price. He listed Albania among the non-successful countries of the region regarding this process, and underlined the political dialogue.

“Believe me, we all want Albania to receive the candidate status and I believe that this will happen. But it is necessary for all political forces in Albania to continue creating a track record for the fact that the new positive political situation in Albania is stable. I would ask our friend here to do everything possible to achieve this, because it is very necessary for the country and for the people of Albania”, Kukan declared.

The Albanian opposition leader, Lulzim Basha, declared:

“I hope that the summit of June will have a positive conclusion for the status matter, but there is a second danger that is becoming even more visible in these first seven months of this government.

It is the danger that this government and this majority has perceived our behavior not as a raised awareness on a joint and unified national approach for such important matters like the European integration, but as a weakness.

This danger is bigger if the majority keeps perceiving this as a permission for killing the Copenhagen criteria and the progress reached so far. I am speaking about what happened in such a little time.

In these first months, the Director of the High Inspectorate of Declaration and Audit of Assets was discharged illegally, by taking competences of the President. The same approach was used for another woman who lead the Audiovisual Media Authority. There was similar pressure against the Secret Service.

Only this week, the government is pushing for what seems like another attempt to take the President’s competences by removing his constitutional and legal power on the armed forces.

Judges are under pressure and legal safety is in danger, due to the attacks made against independent institutions, against the control system and against balances, because the court verdicts are not implemented if they are against the government”, declared Lulzim Basha.

“When this decision will be taken, it will be a joint success for the past government, the past coalition, the current government and the current coalition. I believe that Mr.Basha emphasized the work that was done in 2013, which concluded with a wonderful preparation of elections”, declared Jean Eric Parquet, Director for Balkan at the European Commission.

Due to the European elections, Daul explained that his attention to the region will return in the second half of this year. 2014 was mentioned more for the expected victories of the right wing, rather than for the enlargement message of the European Union in this 100th anniversary of the first World War.
