EPP: “Balkan’s place in EU. There’s meddling by foreign factors”

The increased influence of  Russia and Turkey in Western Balkan remains a
concern for the leaders of European center-right parties, (European Popular Parties) who have
appealed for new eforts to revive the EU aspirations in the region.

“The EU should not stop its enlargement, but it should keep the accession desire high in Balkan. ” This was the message of the resolution that passed last week in Malta, during the congress of the European Popular Parties.

The resolution added that the fulfilling of Copenhagen political criteria, and keeping good neighboring relations, are key for the accession efforts.

The Croatian Prime Minister, Andrei Plenkovic,  insists that the increased foreign influence in the region shows how necessary it is to reinforce the EU commitment for balancing such threats.

“If we hesitate now, rest assured that others will not hesitate to take them away from the block”, he commented.

Croatia, the newest EU member, promised to help Bosnia join the EU as soon as possible.

Euractive quotes the Hungarian Prime Minister, Viktor Orban, declaring that the EU is facing a foreign policy crisis with a destabilized Ukraine in one said, and a troubled Balkan on the other.
