EP votes resolution for Albania

The European Parliament voted the resolution for Albania, appealing for the status to be given as soon as possible, if the three conditions are fulfilled.

A resolution underlines the importance of the independence, the war
against crime and corruption and the depolitization of the public
administration.

The next year’s elections are considered as a
maturity test for the democracy of the country. The European Parliament
resolutions are advisory and have no decision-making power for the EU
enlargement.

Despite the reforms enabled by a new climate after the political agreement of 2011, Stefan Fule reiterated the regret for failing to fulfil the conditions set by the Commission.

“We have been clear on what Albania needs to do to continue progressing in its European path. Unfortunately, the country’s political leaders have not always to put the European integration at the top of their political agenda and have not always been willing to make the necessary compromises for cross party support, for fundamental reforms, evidently required. The necessary conditions are still outstanding so we need to continue encouraging our Albanian friends and opposition to focus on the European process”, Fule declared.[

The Commissioner also mentioned the challenges the country is facing, especially in the Rule of Law and the importance of free and honest elections.

“Albania must built upon the achievements reached so far, must strengthen and preserve the constructive political dialogue. This is essential, so that it can keep giving results in the reforms. Albania also must hand over evidence and show concrete results in the war against corruption, money laundering and organized crime. A successful organization of the Parliamentary Elections 2013 are an essential element for Albania’s European integration perspective”, Fule declared.

Commissioner Fule emphasized the importance of preserving the constructive policy in the region, and underlined the importance clear messages from the Albanian leaders that would promote good relations with the neighbours.
