The European Parliament voted the resolution that condemned the hate
speech used in Belgrade by the President of the Serbian Radical Party,
Vojislav Sheshel, who was released from the International Court of Hague
for health reasons. His trial for murders, inhuman treatment and war
crimes is still on.
“We invite Hague to review the reasons for his release, so that trust can be restored. We condemn the words of Sheshel on the commemoration day of the Vukovar victims, because that would create intimidation among the victims and fear in Vojvodina for new massacres. This resolution is a clear message for the Serbian authorities, who have not answered politically or legally, if Sheshel has violated the Serbian laws for protection of minorities. This means that Serbia would be ready to accept the European values by condemning Sheshel, and they should condemn him. What is the problem? Why President Nikolic, Prime Minister Vucic and Deputy Prime Minister Dacic stay silent? Are you scared of Sheshel? If you keep staying silent, we will be forced to keep asking ourselves about anything you might be thinking about. You must act”, declared Andrej Plenkovic, Croatian European MP.
Belgrade considered the European Parliament resolution as an offence, and Prime Minister Vucic thanked the Slovenian MP, Tanya Fayon, for her efforts to convince the other colleagues.
Although not present in this plenary session, the Rapporteur for Serbia at the left parties distributed a press release in Serbian, which focuses on the significance of Belgrade’s relations with the neighbors, including Macedonia, but without mentioning Kosovo, although its independence is recognized by the European Parliament and Slovenia.
“As rapporteur for my Parliamentary group, I think that Serbia is on the right track as regards the EU integration. I will keep working to support Serbia progress with the reforms and have good relations with its neighbors, especially Albania, Bosnia-Herzegovina, Montenegro, Croatia and Macedonia”, Fayon declared.
“It is regrettable that the radical declarations of Sheshel received such an unnecessary attention by the media and some politicians. I hope it will not be used as an instrument for further political tensions in the region. The objective of this resolution is not to give instructions to the International Court. It is an independent international institution with a clear mandate from the United Nations. For this reason, I hesitate to support this resolution”, declared Eduard Kukan, Chairman of the Delegation for Serbia at the Parliament of Europe.
Despite the abstention of Kuka, the opposition of Fayon and of some Greek and Bulgarian MPs, the resolution was approved since it had the support of the three maini political groups in the European parliament, thanks to an one-week commitment of the elected of Croatia at the European Parliament, not only between the different political forces, but also with the MPs of the main EU countries.
