EP: Optimistic for Albania’s status

The European Parliament change the person that will report for Albania.
Now he is one of the new Croatian Parliament Members, Nikola Vuljanic,
from the far left group in which was the Greek predecessor, Nikolaos
Chountis.

“The general climate in Parliament is optimistic. This means that many of the European Parliament Members consider Albania a candidate for European Union membership. Let’s hope that the Commission and the Council will have similar opinions”, Vuljanic declared.

The Croatian Parliament Member promised that the resolution for Albania this time will be on the right moment, right after the progress of the European Commission. As regards the candidate status, Vuljanic repeated that at least the European Parliament will have a positive opinion.

”I am optimistic about the stance of the European Parliament. Certainly that I cannot guarantee it, because I am only one vote. But I am optimistic for the position held by the Parliament. I cannot say anything for the European Council, which decides on other criteria. Let’s see”, Vuljanic declared.

Top Channel: What priorities you think that Albania should complete first?

Vuljaniç: The judicial system and the rule of law is something that should be brought to an acceptable level, before the membership talks start. Certainly that this is one of those things that it is up to you to change, in order to approach it to the European standards. But this is a matter of membership talks. For the moment it is necessary for our country to come to the point of starting the dialogue, which for me is a key factor.

During the meeting with the government,  civil society and sindicates, Vuljaniç says that they want to learn more concrete things about Albania than what Brussels’ documents show. For this, the new raporteur plans to hold his first visit in Albania on October 16th, when the report for the entire country will be published.
