The conflict between civil society representatives and recycling
industrialists about the waste import law moved this Monday on a
discussion table, where environmentalists brought arguments why Albania
is not ready to import wastes for at least 10 other years.
“You come here as defending lawyers to protect profits. We are here for the life of our children. You have brand clothes, own your own businesses”, declared analyst Artur Zheji.
Environmentalists say that wastes emit dangerous substances when processed by recycling companies, as much as 2% of the total import, and 30% turns into dangerous wastes.
“We cannot deposit this quantity of waste in landfills, because these landfills don’t exist”, said environmentalist Sazan Guri.
According to them, allowing waste import will not encourage cleaning of the waste that is generated in our country.
“Our country can produce 800.000 tons of recycling materials a year for these companies. The remaining materials that are used by the industry will be burned”, Guri underlined.
“Forget these made up stories that our interest is to get waste from abroad. One ton of recyclable paper in Albania costs 10.000 ALL. In Europe it costs 111 EUR. Transportation costs 50 EUR”, declared Bardhyl Balza, chairman of the Recycling Association.
“Why do you support the law, if there is no financial sense to it?”, Zheji answered.
Experts and citizens will sign a resolution addressed to the Prime Minister and Parliament Speaker, demanding banning of waste import.
