The Minister of Environment, Lefter koka, had a joint meeting with civil
society environment associations, in which he discussed the
environmental situation of our country, considering it a national
emergency, and asked for suggestions about the areas that need the first
interventions.

“We are about to establish an environmental committee, as we are obliged even by the Waste Management Law, so that we can propose the Albanian government the declaration of a national emergency situation in many national axes, but also in other very polluted areas”, Koka declared.

As for the forest destruction issue, the Environment Minister declared that they are working on a draft-law that aims to stop the lumber and coal export.

“Forests and rivers have been damaged very seriously. Tomorrow we will have a cooperation meeting with the Interior Ministry, so that we can become part of a large action in defense of the forests. Through a draft-law that we will present to the Council of Ministers very soon, we will try to stop the unprocessed lumber export, and also the export of coal”, Koka declared.

Environmental association representatives accused the businessmen who are responsible for the forest fires, something they do to create more opportunities to sell lumber in the burned areas. The meeting also proposed to consider a national emergency te pollution from urban wastes, and the destruction of forests and rivers. They also asked the implementation of the Integrated Waste Management law, in order to start with the recycling process. According to them, punishing measures need to be taken, same as in other country, starting with citizens and businesses that dump waste materials.
