Environment organizations asked Prime Minister Rama and Environment
Minister Lefter Koka to announce a three-year moratorium for the
construction of energy works on Albanian rivers.

“This huge number of 501 hydropower plants will negatively impact the natural ecosystems, especially for the most sensitive ones, such as the protected areas and national park”, declared Valbona Mazreku, environment expert.

“Albania has not thorough study of the water capacities. The construction of hydropower plants is done simply with the desire to fulfill the energy requirements, without studying what these rivers can supply”, Emirjeta Adhami.

501 hydropower plants have been issued through the entire country when the average rain precipitation is expected to drop. Environment experts say that the construction of HPPs without limits have damaged the biodiversity of rivers.

“The fishing inspector in Pogradec referred that eels caught in these waters are smaller than before, because their migration has been interrupted”, says Mihallaq Qirjo, Director of the Regional Environment Center.

Environment experts say that the construction of these HPPs will change natural beds of rivers and will negatively impact the social and economic life of hundreds of thousands of residents who live by them.
