The recent data from the Institution of Statistics showed that the
unemployment figures have deteriorated in 2013, with more than 125,000
Albanians losing their jobs.
According to Institution of Statistics, the total number of employed people fell from 1,117,000 million in 2012, to 992,000 ni 2013.
This is the biggest drop ever registered in the past years, with one in ten persons getting out of the job market, and most of the other ones are employed in family businesses or even self-employed. According to the Institution of Statistics, the drop has affected all economic sectors, especially agriculture, construction, trade and tourism.
The data show that the number of employed people in agriculture dropped from 529,000 in 2012 to 442,000 in 2013, which means that 90,000 people have lost their jobs in the agriculture sector.
The same tendency was seen in construction, a sector that has suffered the crisis for years. According to the data, 20,000 people lost their jobs in this section. The same numbers are seen for commerce and tourism.
The job market data show that most of the people in Albania, around 700,000, are employed in family businesses or are self-employed. They receive no payment, but due to official definitions they are declared as employed.
Some of them work even part time, which complicates the employment figures and gives a more clear view on what is happening with the job market. The World Employment Association will clarify soon some of the official definitions used for measuring unemployment, which will bring strong change in the job market numbers.
