Electoral reform returned

The Albanian Parliament returned the electoral reform in the daily schedule.

Although it is one of the main conditions for the EU candidate status, the reform has been interrupted and the deadline was postponed three times until May 15th, when the final deadline was missed without changing the electoral reform.

This time coincided with the procedures that started for the presidential election, and this was the reason why Stefan Fule asked Sali Berisha and Edi Rama to conclude the electoral reform, so that the presidential election could become part of the solution, rather than the problem.

This problem still goes on for more than one month, because the electoral reform is on a stalemate with three issues that need to be resolved before the consensual amend of the code.

One is the partial electronic voting, which is considered a matter that can be resolved. The two other issues, when and how the evidence will be taken from the electoral materials and how the Central Election Commission will composed are two of the issues where the parties have found no consensus.

By deciding to conclude the electoral reform until July 12, the Socialists and the Democrats are giving another chance to themselves for finding compromise, although there has been no approach of their stances.

Even after pausing for four weeks, due to the Presidential elections, the Democrats and the Socialists have not thrown any other step.

The three next weeks will be decisive for proving the respective will for finding consensus, and will be decisive for giving the European partners the interior political understanding, which is believed to be the key that opens the doors to the EU candidate status.
