Elections in Ukraine

24/05/2014 00:00

On May 25th, the Ukrainian people will vote for electing their
president. If the election will be successful, there will be a turn for
the crisis of their country that created a conflict between Russia and
the European Union and United States of America.

How important are these elections and what is the interests of Washington in this process?

Alexander Arvizu: It is not important only for the United States of America. This is the first thing that I wanted to say. These are important for Europe and Albania too, because they represent the autonomy, sovereignty and democracy. The elections in Ukraine are an essential moment for Ukraine, the region. The international community must do everything possible to help Ukrainians exert their rights, to elect their leaders and their future peacefully, freely and honestly, only through the ballot boxes. The United States of America are working with he Ukraine, with the OSCE and other international partners to protect the rights of the Ukrainian citizens, so that their voice can be heard through the ballot boxes and legal elections. What is being discussed here, is if Russia will decide to respect the right of Ukrainians, so that they can decide about their future.

The Albanian Foreign Minister, Ditmir Bushati, declared that the elections are important for urakine, the region and the European security architecture, for which the European Union and the United States of America have invested a lot.

Mr.Minister, what is the interest of Albania in the Ukrainian elections that will be held on May 25th?

Ditmir Bushati: Albania is a NATO member that has been very active in unifying the foreign policy with the European Union, the United States of America and NATO. As a NATO member, Albania has contributed in this process through the observers and the monitoring of the elections that will be held this Sunday. Albania has also contributed with its best experience in the joint forums between the NATO members.

Remzi Lani, Director of the Albanian media institution, says that through this vote, the Ukrainian people will decide if their future will be towards Russia or the West.

Remzi Lani: Certainly that these are important choices and Albania has its own interest, no matter how far we are, because we are a NATO member and a European country. We cannot be unaware of the challenges that are made to the security in our continent, to the challenges that are made to NATO and the world order. In this sense, we have interest for united and democratic Ukraine in the united and democratic Europe.

Albert Rakipi, Alberrt Rakipi, director of the Albanian Institution of International Studies, says that despite the physical distance, the fairness of the Ukrainian elections is important for Albania.

Albert Rakipi: Albania is a NATO member country. The alliance has frozen a series of relations with Russian and is committed to resolve the crisis in Ukarine. It is also related with the European Union and the European future of Albania. If there is any interest for Albania and the Albanian society, this is a strategic interest that is related with the strategic interest of the West. Besides the fact that Albania is a democratic country, certainly, it would be in the interest of any democratic country to watch the developing of a normal electoral process in any place, including Ukraine.

More than 19% of 35.5 million voters in Ukraine live in the three eastern regions controlled by the pro-Russian activists: Crimea, now annexed by Russia, Donetsk and Luhansk.
