Elections cannot be postponed, says former Election Commission chairman

Former Election Commission chairman Ilirjan Celibashi says there is no legal option to postpone elections scheduled to be held on June 18th.

“Even if involved parties agree there is no constitutional and legal option to postpone elections beyond the scheduled date. The President has no other option even if Socialist and Democratic Parties agree to do that. Elections can be held maximum one week later, on June 25th, but there is no way they to hold them beyond this date”, Celibashi said.

On Central Elections Commission’s role on the matter, Celibashi insists it is going on with the work as planned. “The date for the election is set and the commission has to prepare the judicial and logistic infrastructure in order to be ready by June 18th. I don’t think there is another option and I think the commission should not interfere on this matter”, he added.

Celibashi also commented on opposition request for a technical government and majority’s stance on the matter. “Both parties are taking a political stance and it’s difficult to give an opinion on this, because everyone looks at the matter on he’s own perspective”, he said.
