The Elbasan incinerator has started work today and is burning the waste of several municipalities as stipulated in the contract.
The Urban Waste Treatment Plant is already in full operation and treats about 120 tons of urban waste from 7 municipalities of the district every day, the authorities say.
After the routine maintenance work, the plant has started the work which consists in the selection and then burning of the waste, a process from which energy is produced.
While incinerators seem to have become the headlines of political accusations for corruption issues, the mayor of Elbasan remembers the time when urban waste was burned in the open, poisoning the air of the city.
In 2016, Elbasan was the first municipality that provided a final solution to the problem of urban waste treatment.
Earlier, the remains were burned right next to the city, which forced the Municipal Council to declare a state of environmental emergency. Now the plant is administered by the 7 municipalities as a joint stock company which serves the entire region.
