Specialists at the Institution of Culture Monuments, in cooperation with the Scientific Research Chenter, have opened the Paleochristian Basilica at the center of Elbasan.
The group of specialists is studying and documenting the data of this mosaic, which, according to French scholar Marie Patricia Raynaud, is the most beautiful in Albania and beyond.
“This is the most organized mosaic in Albania. There are three panels which have symbolic meanings. You can see the fish sea, the fish and the fishermen, which recreates the miracle”, she said.
The mosaic uncovered in 2007 will be used as a tourist attraction.
“It is important for the city as well, because this is a treasure. It would be very interesting, a great tourist area. It would be dangerous to open it because the pictures would be destroyed. The best solution would be putting a temporary cover until a larger project starts for opening the other areas”, said Marie Patricia Raynaud.
