The 2000-year-old citadel of Elbasan is one of the best and most
concrete examples of religious harmony in Albania. Within a very small
space inside the citadel, residents have built over centuries one
mosque, one orthodox church and one catholic one.
Historians say that the Elbasan citadel is an example of tolerance, co-existence and cooperation.
“You’d see that neighbors of different religions are very similar to each other. You cannot see distinctions, and there have never been conflicts based on religion. Elbasan is one of the cities with most inter-religious marriages through the years”, says Roland Gjini.
