Eight babies abandoned every month

Since 1995, more than 700 newborn children have been abandoned in Albania, in the streets or in hospitals.

“Angels’ Cradle” is the department that takes care of the newborns at the “Queen Geraldine” hospital, and Claudia Jeniszewski, the founder, says that she has been working with this program for 20 years, and feels bad whenever a child is abandoned.

“We have a special service with doctors, nurses and even social workers who take care of the mothers and of these children. We have nothing to do with the adoption process. We simply take care fo them”, says Blenard Nonaj, director of the “Queen Geraldine” maternity.

There have been even brutal cases of mothers abandoning their babies in rubbish bins. Jeniszewski says that if a girl is pregnant and needs help, this is the right place for her.

There are two babies in this pavilion that will stay here until they are three months old. However, there are eight babies each month that are abandoned. After the care given for the first months of their lives, the children are sent to the orphanage where they start the adoption procedures.

Claudia has a message for all mothers that feel scared and don’t know where to go: “Our repart is always open at the Geraldina Queen Hospital”.
