The Economic Intelligence Unit of “The Economist” published today the
first report for 2016, analyzing the recent political and economic
developments in Albania. The British report scans the tense relations
between PM Rama, his ally Meta, and the current leadership of the DP
with Basha, the opposition leader.
The Economist Intelligence Unit, a London based analytic group that issues annual reports on the economic and political developments of Albania, gives a pessimistic view of the EU integration negotiations, saying that Albania is expected to make gradual progress with the conditions of the European Commission. The Economist sees that the progress might get obstacles due to harsh political debates between the government and the opposition parties.
The EIU says that for the first time, the majority might be to blame for the integration delays. According to them, Ilir Meta replaced the Justice Minister as an act that ignored the power of Rama, who was against new members in the cabinet. The report notes how Meta has taken a kingmaker role in the Albanian politics since 2009.
The British of the Economicst Unit say that Basha, who took over the DP after Berisha’s loss in the elections, has a hard time defending his leadership in a party that is slowly getting used to a different leader than Berisha.
The analysts of the Economist are hopeful that the Albanian parties will get past these disagreements to make it possible for Albania to open the negotiations by the end of 2016. However, the expectancies are that the negotiations will not be opened until after the elections of 2017.
