The European Union greeted the local elections of this Sunday. The
Spokesperson of the Highest Representative, Maya Kocijancic, said that
the OSCE/ODIHR observations bring to light a number of challenges.
Maja Koçijançiç, Spokesperson of the European Council: The EU has followed the local elections closely. We want to congratulate the Albanian citizens for the participation and the determination to exert their democratic right to vote. The elections were observed by the OSCE ODIHR, who published their observations that bring to light a number of challenges. We encourage and appeal the competent authorities of Albania to keep treating the issues raised by the international observers, and guarantee that the ODIHR Observing Mission recommendations will be followed in order to improve where necessary.
TCH: The EU Presidency and the Commission, in the last Council of Stabilization Association with Albania, declared that these elections were important for the next steps of accession. Do you think that Albania passed the test with these elections to have a positive recommendation from the Commission this Autumn, regarding the start of the accession negotiations?
Maja Koçijançiç: We have the preliminary report of the observers. Certainly that we are waiting for the final recommendations to be complete. The other evaluations will be attached to this. As you know, the Commission has started working for the annual report, which is approved in October. When all these evaluations will be handed over, the Commission will analyze them and give a final stance on the report that will be published on October 14th.
