EC for CEZ, decriminalization and negotiations

The European Commission insists that the CEZ case has never been a condition for Albania’s EU candidacy.

“The European Commission has clearly stated that the progress on a series matters related to the rule of law were the only condition for Albania’s candidate status. CEZ has nothing to do with it”, underlines Spokesperson Maja Kocijancic.

“A regards CEZ, the European Commission has always supported a friendly solution that pleases both parties. The agreement reached on June 2014 should encourage the Albanian government more to follow the necessary reforms for the electricity sector, aiming to guarantee economic stability and compatibility with the Energy Community criteria”, Kocijancic added.

On the other hand, the Commission states that the approving of the decriminalization law, “is an important matter that should be addressed as soon as possible. The rules on this framework are clear”.

“While the respective legislation is being prepared, it is important for the political parties and elected representatives to take their responsibilities for increasing the citizens’ trust on public institutions”, says the European Commission spokesperson for Top Channel, a few days before publishing the progress report for Albania. Even this time, the report is not expected to have any positive recommendation for starting Albania’s EU accession.

Diplomatic sources said for Top Channel that “some of the member countries are hesitant, despite the efforts of Italy which keeps pushing for this process.” Same sources say that Benelux countries “want more evidence from Albania on the rule of law, before starting the negotiations, as noted in the recent meeting of the member countries with Balkan”.
