Border control reinforcements between Greece and Macedonia raise
suspicions that the itinerary of refugees will be pushed towards Albania
and then to Italy, a scenario that has not been formally studied by the
European Commission structures.
Natasha Bertaud, Spokesperson of the European Commission: “I have never seen a risk analyze of this kind. Certainly, we know that the emigration flux is not stable and it could deviate in various circumstances. I haven’t seen anything for the moment that can suggest this new path.
The suspicions about such a scenario came after the participation of Prime Minister Edi Rama at the summit of the countries that are part of the refugee itinerary in Western Balkan.
Natasha Bertaud: Albania was invited since the refugee flux might change. There has been a flux of refugees going through Albania even in the past. This involved Albania in the process that included countries that were affected or could be affected by the refugees’ itinerary.
Macedonia has recently increased controls in the border with Greece, making it more difficult for refugees to get into their territory.
